California Drought Report #80: El Niño Return This Summer

Listening to Joe Bastardi’s Weekly summary at WeatherBell this morning, his assessment was that the current weak La Niña would become an El Niño in the tropical Pacific by summer.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Brian Ochs:

“if you have warmer sea surface temperatures over a larger area of the tropical Pacific you’ll have more of a moisture source to tap into. Usually, during our active seasons where we get a lot of precipitation, we get these atmospheric rivers that will set up.”

These atmospheric rivers bring California summer rain and thunderstorms which will help quench our long-term drought. One of the easy ways to check the progressive changes in the Tropical Pacific is this ENSO Meter at Watts Up With That:
